March Traffic Safety Focus: Seatbelts

Throughout the month of March, the Blood Tribe Police Service , in partnership with law enforcement agencies across Alberta , will be focusing on seatbelt and child restraint safety as part of the Alberta Traffic Safety Calendar.

Seatbelts are one of the most effective ways to reduce injuries and save lives during motor vehicle collisions. Police will be reminding drivers and passengers of their responsibilities under provincial traffic safety laws and encouraging everyone to ensure they are properly restrained before travelling.

Seatbelt Requirements

Drivers and passengers must wear a seatbelt when the vehicle is equipped with one.
Drivers are responsible for ensuring passengers between the ages of 6 and 15 (or children under 6 who weigh more than 18 kg / 40 lbs ) are wearing a seatbelt.
Seatbelts must be properly adjusted and securely fastened .
Learner and probationary (GDL) drivers are not permitted to carry more passengers than the number of available seatbelts.

Child Restraint Requirements

Drivers must ensure children under the age of 6 who weigh 18 kg / 40 lbs or less are secured in a properly installed child restraint system .
All child restraint systems must meet Canadian safety standards .

Exemptions

Although seatbelt use is strongly recommended at all times, exemptions exist in certain situations, including:

Vehicles that were not originally equipped with seatbelts
Delivery driving at 40 km/h or less
Authorized municipal parades
Individuals with a valid medical exemption

Child restraints are also not required (though still recommended) in:

Taxis
Emergency vehicles
Short-term vehicle rentals (14 days or less)

Penalties

Failure to properly wear a seatbelt can result in a $211 fine .
GDL drivers may also receive two demerit points if they operate a vehicle with more passengers than available seatbelts.

The Blood Tribe Police Service encourages all drivers to take a moment before every trip to ensure everyone in the vehicle is properly secured.

PUBLIC NOTICE: Illegal Dumping at Standoff Waste Transfer Station

Blood Tribe Public Works has reported an increase in illegal dumping at the Standoff Waste Transfer Station. We are asking all community members to help keep our facilities safe, clean, and environmentally responsible.

Permitted items (in designated areas only): Wood• Metal • Domestic household garbage

Not permitted:• Dumping outside designated areas• Commercial or contractor waste• Using reserve land for disposal or storage of waste

Additional Waste Transfer Options: Community members may also use the Cardston, Spring Coulee, and Hill Spring/Glenwood Waste Transfer Stations through our agreement with Chief Mountain Regional Solid Waste Authority. Hours vary throughout the week.

Crime Statistics - Year Review 2024/2025

During the year review, the Blood Tribe Police Service responded to 7,201 total occurrences, representing a 10.7% decrease from the previous year. This reduction reflects ongoing efforts in proactive policing, crime prevention, and strong collaboration with community members.

Throughout the year, officers conducted 560 wellbeing checks, responding to concerns for the safety and health of community members. These calls highlight the important role police play beyond enforcement, ensuring support and care for those in need.

In support of accountability and the justice process, 438 cases resulted in convictions, an increase from the previous year. These outcomes are made possible through the combined efforts of officers, community partners, and the courts.

The Blood Tribe Police Service remains committed to transparency, community safety, and building trust as we continue serving the people of the Blood Tribe.

Blood Tribe Police are seeking witnesses

Blood Tribe Police are seeking witnesses in connection with an incident where multiple pedestrians were struck by a vehicle and seriously injured.

Media Release :

On October 10, 2025, at approximately 11:20 p.m., Blood Tribe Police Service and EMS responded to a 911 call reporting that a vehicle had struck multiple pedestrians near the Trading Post in Standoff, just off highway 2. The driver fled the area prior to police arrival.

A 15-year-old female sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary via S.T.A.R.S. helicopter. A 19-year-old female sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital in stable condition.

A short time later police located the vehicle in Standoff Townsite, where the driver was arrested without incident.The subject vehicle is described as a white 2015 Ford Explorer.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. Police are also seeking cell phone, doorbell cam, or dash cam footage of the incident.

Police seeking public's assistance in locating missing youth

On September 25th, 2025 the Blood Tribe Police Service received a report of 2 missing persons.

Chanting SMALL EYES, 13, and Clarence WADSWORTH, 14, from the Blood Tribe, were reported to be last seen around September 11, 2025, at a family member's house on the Blood Indian Reserve, AB.

After extensive police investigation, both youths are believed to be in the Moses Lake area on the Blood Indian Reserve, and actively evading police for unknown reasons. Youth are also known to attend the areas of Cardston, Lethbridge, Calgary and Edmonton.

Chanting is described as 5'7" in height and weighs approximately 140lbs. Chanting has medium-length brown hair and brown eyes.

Clarence is described as approximately 6' in height and weighs approximately 140lbs. Clarence has medium-length brown hair and brown eyes.

At this time police do not suspect foul play.

On June 17, 2025, the Blood Tribe Police Service received a report that Clement 'Duran' WOLF PLUME, 32, of the Blood Tribe, had not been seen by family since June 2023.

Duran is described as being 6'1" in height and weighing approximately 200 lbs. Duran has no fixed address and may be on the Blood Tribe, the city of Lethbridge, or Calgary area.

Police do not suspect foul play at this time.

On June 1, 2025, the Blood Tribe Police Service received a report that Shanielle WELLS, 14, left the Blood Tribe Youth Ranch.

Shanielle is described as being 5'5" in height and weighing approximately 120 lbs. She has long brown hair, and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a black sweater.

Police do not suspect foul play at this time.

In the evening of May 19, 2025 Blood Tribe Police Service received a request to conduct a wellbeing check on a female. After attempts to locate, family reported her missing on May 20, 2025.

Amanda Healy, 39, from the Blood Tribe, was last seen at the Old Indian Hospital at around 9:00pm on May 17, 2025.

Amanda is described as being 5'2 with medium black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a burgundy jacket, black and white sweatpants, and pink Nike shoes.

At this time police do not suspect foul play.

On the evening of February 28 , 2025, the Blood Tribe Police Service received a report of a missing person.

Kittson 'Dogger' Tail Feathers, 13, from the Blood Tribe, was reported to be last seen on February 28, 2024, at a residence in the Moses Lake Community located on the Blood Tribe Nation.

Police investigation revealed that Dogger has been seen in the Moses Lake Community through February 28, 2025 - March 02, 2025.

Dogger is described as being 5'10" in height and weighs approximately 110lbs. Dogger has medium-length black hair and brown eyes. Surveillance footage was observed and Dogger was seen to be wearing the same sweater depicted in the photo.

At this time police do not suspect foul play.

On the evening of January 6, 2025, the Blood Tribe Police Service received a report of a missing person.

Shanielle WELLS, 14, from the Blood Tribe, was reported to be last seen on December 27, 2024, at a family member's house on the Blood Indian Reserve, AB.

Police investigation revealed that Shanielle was given a ride to the Park Place Mall in Lethbridge, Alberta, on December 31, 2024.

Shanielle is described as being 5'5" in height and weighs approximately 130lbs. Shanielle has medium-length brown hair and brown eyes.

At this time police do not suspect foul play.

Violent offender arrested after short-term operational

On December 9, 2024, the Blood Tribe Police Service conducted a short-term enforcement operation on Mitchell BRANDON, who was reported to be on the Blood Tribe Nation.

BRANDON had been linked to multiple violent occurrences in southern Alberta, including discharging a firearm on the Piikani Nation.

BRANDON was located at a residence on the Blood Tribe and confronted by police. BRANDON fled but was arrested a short time later.

Mitchell BRANDON, 32, of Lethbridge, AB, has been charged with flight from police and operating a motor vehicle while prohibited.

BRANDON was also arrested on outstanding warrants out of Piikani Nation RCMP and Lethbridge Police Service for:

Operation while prohibited x2

Dangerous operation

Flight from peace officer

Aggravated assault

Discharge firearm with intent

Using a firearm in the commission of an offence

Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle

Pointing a firearm

Possession of a firearm knowing its unauthorized

Possession of a firearm contrary to order x 3

BRANDON was brought before a JP and remanded into custody to appear in Cardston Provincial Court on December 16, 2024 for the Blood Tribe matters, and December 19, 2024, in Lethbridge Provincial Court on all other matters.
