Chief Of Police

Chief of Police H.L. (Lee) Boyd

Message From The Chief:

I am very honoured to have been called upon twice to serve the people of the Blood Indian Reserve with the Blood Tribe Police Service (BTPS). My previous BTPS experiences, my years away from the BTPS and my new position as your Chief of Police has given me a unique perspective on policing this community and of our police service. When I left in 2002 there were 18 police officer positions at the BTPS, there are now 32. We now have our own Criminal Investigation Unit which investigates all but the most serious and complicated matters that may occur. We also have members who specialize in the control tactics training, traffic services investigations and community based aspects of policing. One member is contracted to the RCMP Academy at Depot Division as a firearms training officer. The membership is diversified, most members have completed post-secondary education and they display an exemplary dedication to duty.

As the BTPS continues to grow and develop expertise we will refocus on the necessity of community involvement including awareness and sensitivity of the Kanai culture. Each police officer and every employee is encouraged to become involved in the community to develop a better understanding of the needs of the public we serve.

The BTPS will also be challenged by upcoming technological and administrative changes that are now required. In the coming year the BTPS will be moving to an upgraded computer database which will be contracted from the RCMP. Several management reviews and a revised public complaint-handling process as required under the Police Act of Alberta are also being implemented.

As the BTPS progresses and changes are implemented I call on the community to support their police service and assist us all in making it one of the best police services in Canada.
